ID Help: Red-Green Glass Bowl
« on: January 18, 2014, 07:53:54 PM »
Hello,

I need some help ID'ing and dating this Red-Green glass bowl. It is probably pressed (the edges of the cuts are smooth-ish, not sharp). Very decorative geometric design all around.  Bottom to mid height of bowl is red, mid to top of bowl is green, there is a blended transition between the two colors.  Some of the red color is missing in small areas revealing clear glass underneath. Measures 8"D x 3.25"H

Thanks for any help!

Hi and welcome Jeff

The sprayed-on colour is meant to imitate amberina glass, an effect achieved by re-heating a certain
glass-formula.
A search with this keyword here on GMB might lead to some results. Meanwhile - though certainly a bit
out of my comfort zone - Jeanette might be a suggestion.

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for your reponse to my post. It was most helpful.  I did a search as you suggested and discovered that my bowl was originally a McKee Fentec mold (circa 1906). Jeanette, who took over McKee in 1961, later produced this bowl but with three feet (footed). I will do more research, but if anyone else cares to add to the thread it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, again, Dirk!

I think what you have is a later L.E. Smith version of the McKee-Jeanette tec pattern bowl. This color spray combo was used by Smith for a number of years on older pressed patterns made from closed factories molds & Smith aquired many of the Jeanette molds. eBay example of the Smith version below:

Hi Ohio,

Thanks for your response with the L.E.Smith version and link.

I looked around trying different keyword searches and found a replica of my bowl but this one is 3-footed and listed as "McKee Fentec Amberina":
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=161140416625&item=161140416625&vectorid=229466

Here is another, sans feet, with an embossed "15" on the bottom* and listed as "McKee Fentec Amberina":

*(I spotted an embossed number "10" on the bottom of my bowl that I missed in my original description.)

I also found another close replica which is also 3-footed and listed as "Jeanette Amberina":

Again, appreciate the responses from helpful Board members :)

Jeff

:) Glad you found an ID so quickly. Hope youŽll be as lucky with your next posts. Some take minutes, some take
years to ID...  ;)
