Perthshire Double Overlay Encased Double OVerlay
« on: January 20, 2014, 03:52:05 PM »
Hi All
Just thought I would post a picture of this interesting weight as I am lucky enough to have this in my collection but what you rarely see is the certificate that goes with it. Perthshire made these weights in various colour combinations for a number of years and although they all looked similar they were each regarded as one of a kind pieces. Peter McDougall told me more cracked than were actually made as firstly the lampwork had to be picked up and made into a clear glass weight which was then covered in an overlay followed by another coloured overlay. The weight had be annealed and when to cool be facetted and brought back up to a very high temperature so it could be encased with another layer of clear glass followed by two more overlays and it was this reheating process that was critical as if the weight was not quite hot enough it would crack when cooled but when they succeeded a very nice weight was made.

Forgot to mention in my post that Perthshire went on to make a triple overlay encased triple overlay but very few of these were made although John Deacons is making them now
