Early Monart Moncrieff paperweight
« on: May 17, 2014, 02:28:39 PM »
Could it be an earlier PY1 from the Moncrieff glassworks.

Thanks Chris

Chris, what do you mean by "PY1"?

I have a two examples with the same green "jasper" ground. Both have a "cracked off" pontil scar with some "crunchiness", and those features are usually taken to indicate 1930s period. But the dome on one of mine is noticeably clearer than the "typical" tinted domes from the 1930s - but it could still be pre-war.

Must have misinterpreted it from here Kev...

" The numbering is by design and those designs starting PY1 were almost certainly made by Paul Ysart at John Moncrieff's glassworks. Designs and weights made after he left Moncrieff are designate PY2 and above, these will be found under Paul Ysart's own name and on Ysartglass.com until all catalogues have been migrated here"

Chris

[Mod: For clarity ... The above quote re "PY1" and "PY2" weights is from the "Scotland's Glass" website and refer to categories originally shown in the "Ysart Glass" website.]

:D Nice find Chris - did you find it fairly local to you?

Apparently there was a retailer in H'gate - I have seen one example of a vase with a Monart sticker and also a retailer sticker.

Hi Roberta, did you call in the new antique centre when you came over saw these 4 yesterday together in a cabinet bought the Monart one 3 more left think one on the left is probably Strathearn and thought the one on the right Vasart  the front one is Perthshire. Don't see much Monart to be honest more Strathearn and Vasart

Which new antique centre? Last time I was over I went to that one at Pannal but there wasn't anything of interest there!
I know nothing about paperweights but if I had picked that one up with a Monart label I sure would have bought it (at the right price of course!)  ;)

Yes the one at Pannal only a couple of miles so go pretty regular some decent bits turn up the 4 were each priced in the £'20s so thought maybe a good price for a Monart?
I know a little about weights and even less about Monart.

A little disappointed that members who know a little more than I do about this seem unwilling to share their knowledge on this occasion.
Anyone want to see the other 2?  ;D

I'm not sure what else you wish to know Chris? It was a VERY good buy, normally I would expect it to be in the £250+ area.

I'll give you £40  ;D

Yes I'd be interested in your others.
