Here is an IoW studio vase - 4.75 inches high textured style body with iridescence - any ideas on age

Thanks

Adam

Really, really early. (but this one is from shortly after the flame pontil mark prunt was made and introduced - it's on it!)
This is an unnamed early experimental "range" which eventually evolved into Aurene. Basically, it is partially cased and strapped Aurene, much more complex than the later Aurene.
It is also found in a Mdina turquoise shade, rather than the cobalt blue of Aurene - they were using up the last of the coloured enamels the Harrises brought back from Malta.

I can't tell from your pics if this bottle is turquoise or cobalt. Ideally, it should have a round clear glass stopper - but I bought a stopperless one from the Studio itself - they are not compulsory to complete a piece.

A great find, highly desirable stuff.

Thanks - one for my collection, which includes some other nice bits of IoW.

Hi

It's cobalt running into a yellow/gold - it looks like early Mdina as you say - I bought it as it has the flame pontil - I now see it needs stopper, this annoys me a bit - but as you say it lovely as it is so I won't take it back

Thanks

The iridesence will be from the silver chloride used.
It used to be quite easy to get the studio to make a stopper for you - it's not as if they fit perfectly, they're just a clear glass blob with a small protrusion to sit in the neck.

The new studio is open now, you could always ask for a stopper to be made. I can't imagine it would be very expensive.
But they are not compulsory for the piece to be considered complete.

It is nice, isn't it? ;)

In terms of colour it looks similar to this vase : https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/IsleOfWightStudioGlass#5579154440543238562

and perhaps the bottle on the right: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/IsleOfWightStudioGlass#5730193729570609234

but there is always loads of lovely variation with Aurene.

Extra snippet of good info...

When in discussion about this range on the IoWSG forum (following my buying a couple of teal coloured strapped pre-Aurene bits from the studio archives) I was assured that every single one of these pieces would have had Michael Harris himself working on it (either alone or with somebody else).

There were very few glassmakers working there, right at the start.

For a picture of the style of the stopper, see here: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/aurene third picture from the top.

More pictures of strapped Aurene, see here: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/exp#1970s
