Small vase with pontil mark. Help with ID please.
« on: July 27, 2014, 12:43:40 PM »
I feel I should know the maker of this lovely little vase, especially with the pontil mark, though I'm not sure if the mark is complete or "distorted. However, all attempts have failed me and I would be grateful for any help. The vase is 3.75 inches high.
Regards
Ronnie

Looks like Alum Bay to me, Ronnie. :)

quite correct  ....   the slightly blunted edges of the pontil scar inside that base depression is very much a signature of Alum Bay.

It should be AB if it's Alum Bay

in that case here are some more posteriors from AB.

there are exceptions to this typical base from them, but the vast majority that I've seen are like this.

think I've just realized what Christine's comment was implying  ........    and indeed it would have been better had I said 'characteristic' rather than 'signature'           ......   at least I think that's what the comment was all about ;)

Maybe the vases don't have an impressed AB like the paperweights do

I think this design of Ronnie's is an early one, pre-AB stamp. The early pieces are very finely blown and do not always have a blob of glass stuck on the (rather highly) indented base they tended to produce. (almost akin to a lampwork style finish)

so my assumption was wrong  -  but to be honest I've never seen an Alum Bay vase with impressed AB, and I must have seen a couple of dozen over the years  -  can only assume pieces marked as such are rare, or it is something found only on p/ws as suggested. :)

I have a strong tendency to ignore pwts.
I do have a small AB mouse, which came in its original box, which is very yellowed with age, although the paper label on it is fine. No AB mark.
I did "discover" AB glass fairly early on in my collecting days (~ 1989 onwards), and had a jack-in-the-pulpit style vase in a green and brown colourway very like Ronnie's current little posy vase,.

This did not have the AB mark, and at the time it was the only kind of AB glass I ever did see, and none had the mark.
That's all I know.
