Art Deco uranium glass unusual lamp with crazy paving design
« on: November 02, 2014, 06:31:29 PM »
Hello all
I bought this lamp this week and have never seen anything like it before.
I don't know how you would describe the actual shape? My mum wondered possibly Egyptian design? Looks a bit like a post box lol
The glass has a moulded crazy paving design much like the Walther Luxor pattern.
I would love some input on this if possible please? Many thanks Nige

I would be careful that if you try to use it to put only a very small and low wattage bulb in it as I do not see any way for the heat to be dissipated.  If you put a 60 watt bulb or higher in it you would stand a good chance of having it crack or shatter from the built up heat.  I am sure it was meant to be used as a dim fairy light to be a decorative accent rather than an actual source of useable light.

Christine is right, as usual in identifying this as Imperial Glass made in their Soda Gold pattern.  Unofficial names for this pattern that you will see somethings are tree of life or spiderweb, but the actual name is soda gold.  It is a kind of Depression Glass that is unlike other Depression Glass patterns.

I like it very much myself and you were lucky to find it and buy it.

Have to ask...what reference attributes this to IG? Evidently its in something I don't have unless I overlooked it in HMW2 & IG 1 & 2 encyclopedia. Good advice given on the bulb...absolutely no higher that a 25W.

I am going by David Doty's large website:  http://www.ddoty.com/sodagold.html  I suppose some other maker could have made some glass in Imperial's depression glass Soda Gold pattern, but the only pieces I have seen have been attributed to Imperial.

Hi
There is a hole in the top for the release of heat.I have a 15 watt bulb in it which is ideal.

Christine I know you were just citing IG as a possibility & my response was not pointed at you. I was commenting on the "this as Imperial Glass made in their Soda Gold pattern" statement from the other poster (not you) namely because IG soda gold has to have the meandering lines over the stippled background & while the stippled/pebbled background is present on the lamp the meandering lines are not so I believe it cannot be positively attributed to IG's soda gold.
