Intaglio pill or snuff box? help please
« on: January 11, 2015, 01:55:02 PM »
Hello there, anyone have any thoughts on this please, it's all hand facet cut with wear to the base which is flat

I'm wondering if it's for snuff or a pill pot?, the lid looks a slightly different colour to the base.

It's tiny being 1 1/2 inches in height and depth and 2 inches in length.

Regards Chris.

I think the people are pressed then acid frosted. They are definitely not engraved; the detail is all wrong.

Thanks Christine, it's incredibly well detailed for a piece of pressed glass, I wonder what the original pressing would have been made from?

I would look in the Hoffman/Hoffmann 1927 to 1933/34 catalogs to see if you can find a match & I agree with Christine, its pressed. Probably a pill box as Hoffman made a huge variety of vanity/personal type items. Sometimes marked with a butterfly on the bottom...I say sometimes because I've encountered Hoffman that matched up perfectly with the catalogs that were not marked.

this is the link for Pamela's 'musterbuch' - bring up Bohemia and run down to the Hoffman catalogues that Ken has mentioned.
