Topic: Unusual Bottle Vase

Hi all. I found this piece and had to try and find out about it. Nothing in my searches...as usual. It is unusual in so far as it has two dimples with a thread of glass joined inside the bottle. 27cm in height The base is pinched in and it has a rough snapped Pontil. Any clues on this ?

the base looks really odd - is it sitting on a mirror or does it have an incalmo base added?

It does look like the bit in the middle was done on purpose, possibly by sticking a long prong through it in the way that "witch balls" are also formed.

Although I've got a Mdina Fish vase that has this feature - it's an accident.

It is on a black material no mirror. I read 'incalmo' but did understand even after searching. It looks like it has been pinched around is the only way I can explain it sorry. I thought the thread would be a deliberate thing but can not work out how it would be done.!!

Incalmo is a difficult technique where two seperately formed bits of glass are added to each other using the heat from the glass itself to form the seal/join.

An afterthought...did they do the thread then add the base ?? It's in the loft and I don't want to go get it tonight lol.

The thread would have been created by sticking a prong through the vessel while it was still hot; perhaps two prongs, meeting in the middle? Similar to the way "ice-pick" flower bubbles ae created in paperweights.

The maker may have had to pull the prong right the way through. I'm not exactly sure how it was achieved, we might need a glassmaker to come along and tell us exactly how.

I don't know whether or not they'd have done the thread or the base first.

 I enjoy finding the stranger pieces and trying to work them out. They only cost me pennies so i don't mind picking them up. One or two have turned out to give me a large return, It doesnt take much when they cost 50p or a £1 lol.    I would like to find out more about this so I hope a Glassmaker comes along to help. Thanks

Probably East European artist piece, someone was  making a lot of these not too long ago. 5 - 15 years but name eludes me.
