Is this Bristol Glass?
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:00:07 PM »
I am looking for identification help with this vase which may be Bristol - but not sure. It is 9 1/2" h with gourd shaped body, long flaring neck with scalloped rim, sitting on circular graduated plinth. base is hollow and open.

information about maker, age appreciated. I am leaning toward early 20th c.

Bohemian for this one, there have been suggestions of these being Moser, who knows, ::), not Bristol, if it is I'll eat my hat!  ;D ;D

that looks to be a very nice quality example with the scalloped rim etc.  Is the rim cut bevelled and gilded?

I think that shape and the open foot reminds me of Harrach vases in opaline.

I have also seen this yellow spatter effect on a signed Moser  vase somewhere (maybe Alfredo or Warren's sites?).

I think that's either a superb photo or one of the nicest examples I've seen of this decor.

I hadn't noticed until you asked - but the edges of the petals of the scallops are indeed gilded though most of it has rubbed off. the edges are not beveled. thank you for the complimentary remarks.

this is getting interesting. I was entirely unfamiliar with harach until you mentioned it. and in surfing around came across this excellent website. here is an item which shares some characteristics with mine. http://www.thegildedcurio.com/item-Harrach-328.html

on the other hand, I need to pursue the mosier lead also, largely because the precision of decoration on my vase seems to be of a higher caliber than what I have seen on the harach examples. however, it is not determinative at this point. good glass makers have their ups and downs.

The decoration on your vase could definitely have come from Harrach as well - no question.  If you look up Harrach Onyx (from a similar period) some examples of pieces with this type of decoration will come up I think.
The enamelling would have been gilded I think and the gilding would have been on the edge of the rim.  I'm surprised the rim isn't neatly bevelled all down the cut edges though.

It's Victorian era and probably dates to 1880/1890 ish I would think.  It could be Moser decorated Harrach or it could be Harrach decorated Harrach or it could be Moser decorated Moser ( I suspect Harrach made it, but the unbevelled rim is a bit odd), or another maker but definitely Bohemian :)

I think this colourway has also been linked to Welz and Wayne has a vase on his site that has a quite similar foot
http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3443

But I have noticed looking at these over a number of years, that the way the yellow and white decor is done does change between pieces.  So some appear to have quite white patches or flags in the yellow and others appear to be a mix of yellow and white streaks.  Yours appears to be the latter.  I think there was more than one maker using this yellow and white.

Warren has made a post on CW on these here.

the information supplied here is excellent, with flying free's explanation being on the money - ie a harrach production, but probably moser decoration, a conclusion I based upon the collector's weekly examples and write up. thank you for the information and insights!
