Topic: Lobed bowl - help with ID, please

Nice and heavy. 6 lobes.
4"/10cm diameter, 2 1/2"/6cm high.
Clear and sky blue, with a dark green swirl.

Any help appreciated.

Oooh another odd one, that's the second oddity this week!  The base just looks so Whitefriarsy.  :shock: Never seen this shape before though...shock horror...couldn't be a one off, could it??  (that's something I never thought I'd hear myself type!)

Try wf.com, see if perhaps Patrick Hogan can identify it.  Unless anyone else has any ideas?

EDIT:  This could be STEVENS & WILLIAMS not Whitefriars.

I'd tend to agree with you about the WF-style base. I have a similar lobed olive-green (Meadow?) 'pot' with the base that looks like a 5-petal flower, with controlled bubble. Very thick glass but I've had to make the ultimate sacrifice and empty out my rubber bands to take the photo :lol:

Great chunky pot for rubber bands David!  Could've been made for them.   Perhaps it was...lol

Stevens & Williams streaky vases are sometimes confused (and no wonder) with Whitefriars, so it prompted me to have a look on Google.  So...all things considered, I'm plumping for Stevens & Williams and feel fairly confident.  That's sticking me neck above the parapet huh?  :lol:

PS:  I use one of Adam's little landscape vases for pens, it's good to use glass isn't it?  It gives me pleasure everytime I look at it.

Max, I agree with using glass - I keep my art paintbrushes (as opposed to the decorating ones that is!) in various pressed glass vases - the sort that used to come with pickles or suchlike in them, and as for bowls they have a whole range of stuff from pot pourri to teddy bears in them!  :roll:

Thanks for the suggestions.

My initial reaction was Whitefriars, too, cos the feel is right, but I've never seen a WF vase or bowl with 6 base lobes, only 5 - the 1950s molar vases, the lobed vases from 1978-80, etc.  

Presumably the pieces are blown into a mould to create the lobes before the item is finished (I've had the odd go at blowing glass, and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing...)  so if this is WF I'd expect there to be other WF pieces with 6 lobes.  Do you know of any?

The blue does match the WF 1980 sky blue pretty well, so this could date from around that time.

Why do you think S&W, Max?  I'm fairly iggerant of their products, and am only acquainted with the earlier cameo stuff etc.

I'll post this on the WF site, too,  and see if Patrick rises to the bait.

Well, I plumped for Stevens & Williams because of the colours and the ground & polished pontil mark, and there being no-one else I could think of with those two things, apart from perhaps WF.  Of course I could be wrong, but that was my thinking.

It isn't a style I've seen before from S&W, but with the lack of anything else I could think of I made an educated guess.  :wink:

Hi David, your green bubbled one looks like Whitefriars Pat. No. 9377 and it will be Sea Green (Meadow Green was produced much later  in 1970 - 72)

I use these small vases for tweezers, small scissors and other "girlie" bits and pieces on my dressing table!!  Emmi
