Gary - Nice find!

Yes it's a letter "S", and yes Perthshire Paperweights used an "S" cane in some of the designs for 1987. They probably made a variety of those complex "date canes" and I guess they could differ in the use of canes for the outer surround. Certainly, in the main book on Perthshire Paperweights, the example "S" cane shown has different outer canes than the one in the shade.

Of course, even with a date cane, that may not be the actual year that Chic Young made the shade.

thanks Kevin for the S cane info, i understand that he could have used the date cane any time after the year it was made for but i was wondering if they may have made letter canes for putting into weights for other reasons except for the date

yup its a lovely piece just glad to be able to add it to my collection, just need to get proper ceiling bowl hooks and better chains and its going up in my living room

My understanding, based on details from the book The Complete Guide to Perthshire Paperweights is that letter canes were only used for three reasons ...
a) a "P" (or "PP") cane as an Id for Perthshire Paperweights
b) a code for the years (A-Z = 1969 - 1994)
c) for use by those allowed to add their own signature canes

In the case of c) known people using signature canes at Perthshire Paperweights were: Jack Allan (JA), John Deacons (JD), Peter McDougall (PMcD) and a collaboration between Peter McDougall & John Parsley (PMJP).
