Any ideas what this strange object might be would be much appreciated :P

4¼" (11 cm) in length.
3¾" (9.5cm) diameter - 'coned' end - difficult to tell how thick it is here.
Slightly less than ½" (1 cm) diameter opening with a 0.5cm flat rim.
Weighs approx. 240g.

Many thanks :)

Frank previously informed me that it has nothing to do with lighting - as I had incorrectly thought initially 8)

Maybe it used to have a stand or a basket around it? It reminds me a bit of those old Lambrusco flasks. (Wrong shape of course, but perhaps the same concept?)

I know what this is!!!  This is called a "glub glub"  In the old days (early 1900s) they would put this in a punch bowl and it would fill up making the sound glub glub.  I think after it was filled they would pour it into someone's cup.  Doesn't sound too sanitary, and why wouldn't they just use a ladle I can't answer.  But I saw a American Brilliant Cut Glass glub glub go to auction a few weeks ago and that's how I know what it is!!!!! :D  :D
