Topic: Silver plated ruby glass vase. ID = Yamatogumi, Japanese

This belongs to a charity shop so not mine unfortunately. It looks as though it's been given as a present at some stage, it has "from phadke 24-12-40" scratched into the base.

The makers mark looks like a boat with a letter "Y" on the sail. I haven't been able to find the manufacturer. It has copper underneath the plating so i presume it's quite old? Any ideas?

Can you get a closer pic of that mark?  When I zoomed it -- it kinda looked like a script, small * f * to me, in (maybe) a triangle shape???. 

Also, is that a date under that other name??

It's a date, probably 1940, i don't think they put the date in that format in 1840, i could be wrong though. It's ruby red at the top but goes towards orange near the bottom.

Could the Y possibly stand for Yacht - given that's sort of what it's on.
But that would be the metal, not the glass.

I'm confused by the copper underneath. Sheffield plate is silver and copper sandwiched together before working it, and I know it's vastly superior to EPNS, probably more akin to solid silver in value.
But that's all I know.

The bottom of the thing looks like spelter, but the bodywork doesn't.

(I do try to avoid metal bits on glass - far too confusing, too much intellectual and collector focus on the metal and not enough on the glass.)

Yes, 'Y' for yacht, it makes sense now, thanks Sue.

It's probably not a makers mark as i previously thought. I think the mark belongs to a yacht club. The other clue is that it looks like a trophy, it has trophy style handles.

I have no idea about the metal but can't see any copper on the base section.

Focus on metal is often easier as it is much easier to date and this piece is 1890 maybe, suggested by the styling, but more likely 1920s/30s. And assuming the Phadke is Indian and bought it new as a gift 30s would seem good. Which in turn makes a UK source more possible. The mark is a foundry mark and in that period highly likely to have been registered as a trademark. The nautical theme may suggest that it was a foundry that specialised in shipping fittings so possibly coastal. You might be able to track the foundry mark down on a shipping forum somewhere if trade marks flunk.

I'm not sure if they made the glass as well but that pins down who made the silver plate.
