Whitefriars Bark Vase? No 12.
« on: August 15, 2015, 08:59:27 PM »
Hello,

I recently bought a small oddment of a 20th century glass collection as I wanted one of the paperweights among it to add to my collection of rare British paperweights.

I am finding it very difficult to research a few of the items in the collection, as I have found the same objects to be attributed to several different makers / nationalities, mostly czech or murano and I am unsure which to believe and it has been difficult to find a definitive answer.

I am hoping there will be some assured expertise here to help me to identify these vases with more certainty.

although screen pix can distort colours often, the watery raspberry looks unlike a W/F's colour to my eyes.        Is this just one vase or is the top picture a separate piece to the lower one?
The last picture shows what appears to be a sort of quatrefoil shaped blob where the pontil scar would be, usually, and this is then ground away to leave a polished depression.              Is it my eyes, or is there a sort of four lobed blob under the base?

It shouldn't be difficult to research W/F's - there are on line catalogues and am sure plenty of internet pictures to help  -  especially with bark vases.
Unfortunately, bark textured vases from whatever source, are often labelled W/F's by the hopefuls of this world and confusion is commonplace  -  you may find some information in the attached link helpful - the lady in question is very knowledgeable regarding Whitefriars.

It is possible this is 'Island Glass' (Isle of Man) - there was a discussion some years ago on the whitefriars.com forum. From what I remember, they were made with an original W/F mold, but with the addition of some kind of impressed mark in a circle on the base in place of a polished pontil mark. One was seen in this raspberry colour.  Sorry cannot be more informative as my old memory not up to much these days, but it could be a starting point.

Just found a link to one of the forum discussions, although the photos have been lost
