Purple vase with 4 windows
« on: October 22, 2015, 04:32:25 PM »
I'm stuck with this vase, its purple in colour but you can only tell this when held in the light.
It has 4 clear windows so you can see through the vase to the other side.
Any help welcome as I have no idea about it

Is that gold and silver leaf on the surface?

I don't believe so as the texture isn't smooth

Sure looks like gold and silver leaf...

Some examples of gold and silver leaf used on the surface on this page: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/azurene

I think you may be on to something there!
It didn't occur to me that this could be IOW due to design
Any ideas of age, designer and value?

I don't think it is actually Isle of Wight Studio Glass, not unless it's something from the maker's shelves, or an experimental/trial thing, but it could be related - via a glassmaker who trained there for example, that's if it dates back to the early '70s. If later, which it could well be, I think the technique for applying the foils had become much more widespread.
Gold foil isn't a problem, but Silver is - it was Michael Harris and William Walker who had worked together on getting that right for the Azurene range.

It does look similar to the IOW stuff but I'm not the expert on that!
I just wondered how big it is - I've seen similar type of "window" things in candle/tealight holders - do the windows magnify at all?

It's around 9.5 cm in height and the same in diameter.
The windows do magnify instead of being clear glass
