Isle of Wight or not Isle of Wight
« on: November 22, 2015, 09:39:56 AM »
This small blue bullet vase was one of my early collection pieces but I have never been able to positively identify it. It stands 6 inches (15cm) tall and is a deep blue reminiscent of Quink ink. The colour and style is very close to that used on some of the Isle of Wight 'Aurene' pieces but it just has a snapped off pontil mark on the base. Also I cannot find this shape in any Isle of Wight searches. I'm hoping someone may have something similar with a label so I can 'put this one to bed' as they say.

It does not look like Isle of Wight Studio Glass but could of course be from one of the several other glass makers on the island. Saying that I have absolutely no idea who did make it.

When searching for an id keep an open mind, narrowing the options often means that you miss or don't consider possibilities...

The decor and colour has similarities with a Cari Zalloni piece for WMF that I had.

I don't think it can be IoWSG either, despite the decor.
I wouldn't rule out Phoenician, but I couldn't rule it in either.

The reason I thought Isle of Wight was because of similarities in the image below. This is about as close as I've come so far but the shape is all wrong. Were 'seconds' sold off as unmarked pieces I wonder? I will do a search on Phoenician and Gozo/ Mtarfa to see if I can get any closer.

Also an example of a Phoenician bud vase which seems to show a similar red in the pattern

I suspect the first piece you show is Mdina.
Phoenician did do similar shapes, slightly shorter than Mdina, and at IoWSG, experimental bits by individual makers were sold from what were called the Maker's Shelf in the shop, so yes, "seconds", trials and experimental things were sold.

It's the shortness combined with the thick base that makes me throw Phoenician into the mix.

[Mod: Sue's initial comment here related to Steve's apology for using direct copies of copyright images. However, issues relating to those images have been tidied or deleted - thanks, Steve for the confirmation of sources.]

Don't worry about it, our lovely mods will fix things, but if you want to show an image from the web in future, please provide a link to the original image - or the board could get into trouble over copyright.
I think there could be a problem with the second image too, the link there just goes to an image - no host site.

Welcome  :) I forgot to say that before - sorry!
