ID Help please art deco ashtray/pipeholder Reg No 808473
« on: December 10, 2015, 01:34:38 PM »
Any ideas please on maker of this frosted/satin glass ashtray/pipeholder. I am guessing British due to Reg.No. (808473) which appears to date to December 1935.
5 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 x 1 1/2, this has a few fleabites around edges presumably from people knocking out pipes over the years and these days like all smoking related items very non PC but I think this is a really stylish piece.
Any thoughts much appreciated

That's a bad assumption. A fair number of registered designs were not made by British companies; they were just designs registered here

Assuming that the registration number is British (as is likely), then a registration date in December 1935 is correct. As Christine correctly points out, however, the actual manufacturer may not necessarily be British as many designs were registered by agents for overseas manufacturers.

Unfortunately, Reg. No. 808473 does not appear in 'The Blue Book' (Glass Association; registration numbers 1908-1945), but some registrations are not listed because they were listed (erroneously or for some other reason) under a class other than glass (pottery,  for example).

An interesting item nonetheless.

Fred.
