Topic: Term for tiny canes with fluffly appearance

Hi, this paperweight is about 2 1/2 inches wide.  I was wondering if there is a term for this style with the many tiny densely packed canes. It has a fluffy appearance, almost like a terrycloth towel.

The general term for this pattern is "carpet ground", on account of how the canes look like "tufts" in a carpet.

Your weight is from Murano and it is possible that Italian makers had some other name for the style.

The carpet ground style has many canes set in a close-packed form and sometimes the "carpet" is made up of identical individual canes. But in the patterned versions like this one, it is possible to see that the ground is made of larger "complex" canes.

Starting at the centre there is a group of six star / cog canes around an identical cane and these are set in the darker (reddish) colour. That cane group is surrounded by three opposing pairs of canes made in the same way as the central group ... the pairs being mainly blues and yellows. then that larger complex group of canes is repeated as a wider surround to the edge of the pattern. So, in this case, it s simpler to construct the ground with larger complex groups rather than using a mass of single basic canes.

I like this - it is detailed and skilled - I have some Murano weights that are rather splodgy and not very accurate compared to say Scottish carpet grounds - but this is very nice
