Could this be monart/vasart?

I bought this this morning could it be Monart /vasart ? Ive not seen anything in this shape before. The pontil and colours seemed familiar. It is 9.5 cms wide and 7.5cms tall.

I dont know if the wooden lid it came with is a help or hinderance, it was obviosly made for the piece as it fits well. The wooden lid is fairly age worn /sunned has a 60/70's feel.

Hi David,

It looks like Monart and the lid was certainly a later addition, presumably replacing the broken original.

Can you add some close-ups of the rim please, in the photo it looks like it has been ground and polished. If so, you should see a joint line where the colour layer is.

I'm not sure if these pictures are any use, the sun was disappearing fast.
Id be amazed if it had been cut. No real idea of how it would look but i think the colours and appear shapes flow naturally to the edge and over it .
If not a cut down and as it doesn't appear as one of the Monart shapes, does this mean its from another maker? Are there other companies who produced similar pieces or only copyists (not really worth faking a piece like this)?
 It would be great if it was my first piece of Monart, but it was inexpensive, so no real loss. Ill keep it anyway. David

It is Monart, shape DC minus lid or YH .

The edge photos don't help and I can't find a picture that shows it so I made a sketch of a cross section. On the left is the normal fire finished rim, the orange line is the enamel layer and stops short as the clear glass was shaped over it. To remove chips it is neccesary to cut down and then polish. A good restorer can do a perfect job but with Monart the enamel comes right to the edge as shown on the right. When you look at this edge you can see this enamel layer as a line on the surface, even if you cannot feel it.


It would affect resale value only marginally but a missing lid is a bigger problem :?  However, I used to own that YH above and always kept the lid off as it covered the aventurine almost completely 8)

Thanks for such a great description/diagrams. I can really see what you mean and I'll know what to look out for in future. It also shows that my pot isn't ground down. Don't know how I missed the jar and cover shapes.

No worry about it being worthless.Even without a lid £2 can't be too bad for a small starter piece of Monart.
