Is Chance's glass the same as Chance Brothers ?
« on: May 10, 2016, 07:05:57 PM »
Picked this pressed glass item up today because of the interesting shape. Underneath it was marked Chances at one end and British made at the
other end. I have no idea what its purpose is but I was thinking it looks like a base for a glass dome?
It is 175mm long ,125mm wide and 35mm high with 45 degree slope towards the middle
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tim

It's usually known as Chance's glass to collectors, me included, I don't recognise this piece, I've had a look through book 2 and can't find anything, the first book is somewhere else, I'll have a look when I find it  ::) ;D ;D

It looks a bit like some of the oven ware but it's a bit small for that more suitable for soap as Anne said, had a look through the other book, nothing there either, got me !  ??? ???

Something architectural, perhaps, like a pavement light?

how about some form of shop display item, with perhaps a small plastic or glass dome/covering that sat over the central raised part. :-\
sorry, just realized that Tim had already suggested that idea.

The nearest thing I can find is the Orlak kitchen ware in David's second book but can't see that particular shape and I have no idea how Orlak was marked, sorry  ::) ;D ;D

Thanks for all your input and suggestions. I posted one more picture just to highlight what looks like paint on the second vertical face. This substance seems to have gone around the whole circumference of the item.
I can see no marks or scratches in the central feature.
I'm stumped.
Thanks again.
Tim

that might indicate a sealant - perhaps some form of mastic/rubber - which might support Stephen's suggestion of an industrial use.
