I don't think its a candlestick holder Keith.  More likely for single flower or a spills vase.
Its like a tree trunk with roots :o

Haven't you seen bases with creepy roots like this before?
The appear on Richardson uranium spill vases and on their acorns and loads of other Audreys.
(You do know what an "Audrey" is, don't you?)

Your vase is normally called a "thorn vase".

I know Audreys, have a few myself, in fact, cough, cough, I met the person who did the voice for Audrey in the film ! not uv reactive, first I've seen  like this, ;D ;D
