Frosted glass sundae dish or candle holder?
« on: December 05, 2016, 08:56:35 PM »
Hi, I'm totally new to this. We have inherited some glassware, one of which is this frosted glass dish. It has a blue asymmetrical fluted bowl with a clear base. It is heavy with thick glass. It is about 15 cm high (6 in). It looks like moulded / pressed glass. I wondered what age it is. It looks to me art deco/nouveau in style, but could it be a modern repro? And is it a dish or a candle holder? It has bubble in the glass and ripply 'wrinkles'. The condition is perfect!

I hope someone can shed some light on this beauty :-)

Hello and welcome to the board.

Your images are way too small to be able to see the detail of the item clearly enough. We need images that are around 700 pixels along the longest edge, optimised for web use, and they should come in under 120kb to fit the board's file size limit. You don't need to make thumbnail size images as the board does that automatically from your big ones.

If you need help with resizing images we have a help and how to post here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34093.0.html  which also has links to free-to-use online image resizers if you need them. If you get stuck please email me directly for help (click the wee envelope below my name on the left to email me via the board.) :)

My first impression is this is a fairly recent piece, but with bigger images we should be able to tell you more. Also, when asking for ID we need a copy of the base as well, as even if there is not maker's mark we can tell much from the base as to how and when it might have been made. Thanks!
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Hi, Many thanks for your reply. I did try with 700 pixels but without success, in fact I tried so many times to load the photos I almost gave up. I will try again with the larger sizes :-) Thanks you for the advise on sizing! I will add some more photos too...and yes, my instinct is that it is recent too, all the same same, I'm no expert!

my sympathies that you are still having trouble loading bigger pix  -  I use IrfanView for resizing - down to 700 pixels on the long measurement from the original camera size of something like 3050  -  then Picasa for editing contrast and colour.             IrfanView is a free download and is really useful.

Looking at your glass, I don't see anything to suggest either nouveau or deco  -  two artistic styles that are very different in appearance as am sure you're aware  -  the former originating during the last quarter of the C19 and continuing a little into the C20 and influenced by Continental art, and the later deco style which had it's origins in the period between the two wars, and again influenced by Continental avante garde fashion.             Provided something meets the artistic criteria of one or other of these styles, it can be called nouveau or deco even if it was made yesterday  -  it's all about what something looks like  -  but people being people usually want period style, so they'd prefer nouveau that was made in 1890 and deco made in 1930.             Which is fine, provide we appreciated this does affect the value :)

Your glass is attractive, and I'd suggest very modern - which is reflected in your comments about the condition -  but my opinion is that style wise it has nothing to do with deco or nouveau.
