Topic: Apothecary jar date please.

Hi all,this jar is 9" tall with a polished Pontil and plenty of wear,there is also a few bubbles and seeds in the glass with obvious tooling marks.The stopper has a broken Pontil and black in the folds..any idea on the date would be welcome and how the stopper was made,thanks.

I see these at fares regular, some with worn labels, the wear is due to it be used a lot, if they are in a wooden frame/ box there not worn, if acid has been used they are really cloudy. burnt or corroded glass.

Yup I've seen them in boxes at my local auction and I've never really looked into their history,do you think about the last quarter of 19th?...I would have thought they would be using a bottle type mould by then.

Angela Bowey had a book about apothecary glass that covers jars and all sorts of other glass items they used. She's away at the moment but I'll drop her a line and ask if she would be kind enough to check for anything similar when she gets back.  I have two brown jars of a similar shape, but wider, in bottle brown, but mine are moulded with UGB impressed on the base of them.    http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pid=484

Thanks Anne that would be great if she could,the stopper looks like it started off hollow and then had the square nob pushed into it somehow?.
