Iridescent trailed glass bowl - Czech ? help to id please
« on: January 10, 2017, 09:52:33 PM »
Hello and a Happy New Year to all
Here is an iridescent bowl vase about 9 inches across, with an almost mirror like finish and heavy applied gold trailing. it is cased on a dark red interior bears an illegible mark I have tried to picture, has some wear to base I think its 20 years old or older, also incredibly heavy. My first thought was modern Czech, then Chinese ! then maybe English. Can anybody help ?
Best regards
Rose

Try taking the base shot from a shallow angle using the sky as a light source - rather than square on.  The flat base will appear light and the writing darker and any pattern and colour is eliminated.  See an example where the square on made part of the signature invisible and the shallow angle was much better.

alternatively try placing a small loupe/magnifying lens between the camera and bowl, and adjusting distances between each to produce a sharp focus before pressing the button.
Combining this with the advice from Ross, of low angled light (is this what is known as raking light?) - and you should get an image in which the mark will hopefully appear larger and clearer.

Sorry, can't help with an id for the glass. :)

You can also make your pictures much bigger. You have 125 kb per picture. Making the longest dimension 700 pixels when you resize often works

The "Kosta Boda" details are on one of Ross's items - his photos are examples of how signatures etc. can be easier to see in an "angled" image.

For the OP's images, as well as providing a larger image, and perhaps an angled viewpoint, dusting the details with a little talc - and gently wiping away the excess - might also help.
