yes, quite right - aventurine is copper and I should have said 'gold coloured', but then again aventurine is probably one of those words that's mis-used often. In fact aventurine does look coppery in colour, rather than like gold. Real gold leaf was used in some of the Murano pieces, I seem to recall, and have to say the flecks in this piece do look goldish in colour - perhaps more so than coppery in colour.
I was prompted to comment about mica as this was something I was involved with a few years back

In my first job in the city I was with firm of brokers who amongst other things mediated with U.K. importers and exporters in India, and at that time there was still a trade in mica for radio valves and boiler windows etc., although it came to an end quite soon after I started.
I don't know the statistics but thinking of similar items we've had over the past few years, I seem to recall more pieces with aventurine and gold, than mica. If you get a chance Christine, remind me of something we've had that included mica
