Can anyone help id this cased/sommerso vase?
« on: May 18, 2017, 09:06:21 AM »
Hi.  I recently found this vase in Yorkshire and am hoping someone may be able to give me some pointers to origin (make, date, etc).  I think it could be either Murano or Czech but am more than happy to be corrected on this.  Double sommerso - internal cranberry (or deep pink) surrounded by a rich blue in clear glass (slight traces of green in the clear glass under UV light that I believe points to traces of magnesium).  Running down the entire length of the piece is a clear glass 'wing' (I'm not sure how else to describe it - anyone got a better term?) that curves from above the top centre to the side at the base.  Flat polished base, with a good number of surface scratches on the base; there is also signs of a very shallow ground out polished pontil on the base, but I'm not sure if that is deliberate or simply the result of not enough polishing of the base.  Unfortunately no marks to give any clues.  It measures 9 cm tall x 8 cm across at the widest part x 5 cm deep and weighs almost 700 gm.  If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.  I've done two posts with 4 images on both - if anyone wants any more let me know.  Thanks

And 2nd post with 4 more images - base (hopefully showing shallow pontil and surface scratches), detail of sommerso at base, detail of rim and finally view from above.  Again many thanks for any help.

I would say Murano. The green glow is from manganese, not magnesium. The shallow pontil mark plus polished base means that the pontil rod snapped off to deeply into the body to make it possible to finish by just grinding off straight across and then polishing (it's not uncommon)
