GLASS MUSHROOM WITH INITIALS ON BASE

(1/1)

Dubarry:
I'm at a loss to identify the Maker/designer initials on the base of the mushroom. I'm not really able to decipher which angle to approach them, I hope someone may be able to help with this! The height of the mushroom is 75mm or 3 inches. Many thanks. Barry

brewster:
I'm pretty sure that sig says GS for the Gordon Studio in Victoria, which these days is located at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. So a little Aussie! They have a website:
http://www.gordonstudio.com.au/

They have made decorative mushroom paperweights, but don't expect to find a close match on the web site. It looks like the date on yours is 94, and lots change in 23 years.

What is interesting to me is the signature GS is not in Eileen Gordon's handwriting, which is the usual thing even on studio items made by someone else working there at the time.

Dubarry:
Hi Trevor, many thanks for your response.  I think you may be onto something here!  What I could see was a G with a W on the tail of it and once your head is set on what you think it is, it's hard to change your mind, but I can now see GS and my W is just a wavy end on the G.  The "94" to me were more initials (maybe DE) but it does have a 94 look to it when it's pointed out, as you have done.  Thanks again! Kind regards, Barry

brewster:
To complete the story, here is a much clearer GS sig from roughly the same period (in Eileen G's hand) and a studio sticker on the base of a perfume bottle.

Trevor

Dubarry:
Thanks again Trevor.  Thanks also for the images, and background information. I totally agree it's a Gordon Studio piece. Kind regards, Barry
