Topic: Libochovice Trinket Set

This is a bit of a mixture of a Libochovice set. The tray is a No.1340 (pre 1958 catalogue), the large/100mm. pot is No. 1882, the small/77mm. pots are 1883 and the ring holder is 1884. The 120mm. candlesticks are not the correct 1881 pattern but are similar to the 110 mm. 1886 pattern (pre 1958 cat.) but with added decoration around the sconce to match the pots.

It looks like an English Bagley "State" Set, or Bagley State Tray only with Libochovice Trinket Pots Candlesticks and Ring Holder.

Is the tray the same colour as the rest? A pic of all the pieces together could be useful.

I've only ever seen the 1340 set in clear so far, the tray image from the CD appears to have cut off corners but the base pattern is certainly similar. This could lead to an explanation as to why Bagley made the set with a totally different tray to the Lib set, perhaps they used the "wrong" mold for the set?

Thanks Jayne, of course you're right about this, it is a Bagley State set. I found the Libochovice pieces and assumed it was by them but with variations, although it does show where Bagley got their inspiration. I assume it wasn't the other way round. My set is all the same colour and matches the catalogue images and photos on GTS.

I've just read the note on GTS that some of these pieces appeared in the Libochovice pre 1958 catalogue so I wasn't totally wrong.

According to Angela Bowey's book there was war-time legislation which allowed British companies to copy "enemy" designs but there is no evidence that Bagley did this and indeed their designs were copied by others. They also sold some of their moulds abroad.

Marcus Newhall in his book states "One example is the "State" pattern produced by Bagley from 1939 to 1975, the whole set composed of items which were formerly Libochovice patterns, previously imported by Hoskins Rose Ltd.". It strikes me that Marcus's catalogue "Libochovice before 1958" is actually considerably before 1958, a lot the designs look to be from the early 1930's and follow on from the 1925-28 catalogue.
