whilst on the subject of this genius, it might be worth adding some relevant historic interest regarding one of his best know piano compositions ................. it transpires that the lovable little number we know as 'fur Elise', owes its title to a misunderstanding, which occurred one day at the composers home.
The young lady of the same name was absent at work when the postman called at her apartment, adjacent to the Beethoven's, and being ever helpful the postman went to the next apartment where the door was opened by frau Beethoven, who kindly took in the parcel with the promise that she would give the item to fraulein Elise when the girl returned from the office.
However, before this intended event could take place, there was another knock at the door - some relatives of Herr Beethoven, being in the area had decided to drop in and surprise their aunt and uncle - just prior to which point the maestro had run to the piano to try and finish this little gem we all love so much.
Entering the hall, the visitors could hear immediately the plaintive and haunting notes of the maestro's new composition, and being so impressed with the tune asked Frau Beethoven what it was called......................... being rather pre-occupied discussing kitchen matters with the new cook, the mistress of the house assumed, wrongly - and history denies us the reason behind this cataclysmic faux pau - that her relatives were referring to the owner of the parcel left by the postman.
"Oh", said Frau Beethoven "das ist fur Elise" - at which point, ordinarily, this mis-understanding might have been left to gather dust on the shelves of history and been heard of no more............... but, being so enthralled and haunted by Herr Beethoven's new composition, the visitors decided to inform the world in advance of this most recent piece of pure genius. And so by this most unintended confusion, history was endowed with 'Fur Elise', and no matter how the Beethoven's tried in the coming years to eradicate what to them was a rather vulgar and commonplace name ............... it had in fact been their intention to name this piece 'The Sunlight Sonata' - nothing could shift the public from calling it by this most enigmatic of titles - Fur Elise.
