Topic: Ysart Brothers / Vasart ?

[The Glass Staircase]

Hi,

I picked this weight up last week in Perth and I'm just wondering if I'm correct in thinking it's a Vasart or Ysart Brothers weight ? It measures 7 cm diameter has 7 spokes or twists with 1-2 pattern on clear / no ground and a ground out and polished pontil mark.

Hi Adam,
Its efinately one of the two and to me the canes and that ground out base would lead me to think Ysart Brothers, but I'm sure Kevin will be along soon to advise For sure.
It is a very nice tidy weight too I find Vasart usually somewhat scruffier.

All I can see is that the use of the word brothers would indicate Salvador wasn't around, so are you referring to a later time?

I found this old thread where the weight in question is very similar to mine only this one doesn't fluoresce under uv light so I guess this must be from 46-56 period ?

All of the canes in this weight can be found in items from the "Ysart Brothers" period 1946-1955 (trade name "Vasart"). But some (or many) "early canes" do go back to the 1930s (and may be found in pre-war "Monart" bottle stoppers as well as some paperweights and other items). However, as has been mentioned, the base finish, with its rough grinding is very typical of the 1946-1955 "Ysart Brothers" period.

Your weight should show a fluoresence of a shade of green under a standard Longwave UV lamp (blacklight) - even a battery powered "penlight" will show this in a very dark place and when held very close to the clear dome. My commnet in the other thread about "shortwave uv" being needed to tell the difference betwen early Vasart (Ysart Brothers period 1946-1955) and later Vasart (Vasart Ltd 1956-1964) [and also the later Strathearn years] was based on the point that for the later period (1956 onwards) the glass changed to a lead-based mix and this is indicated under shrtwave uv (where a definite blue reaction is seen) not regular "blacklight" (longwave uv).
