Baccarat St. Louis Powder trinket boxes 1870
« on: January 24, 2019, 06:21:10 PM »
Evening all,
Thought I’d share this little gem which I recently won at a bargain. I didn’t know who made it but liked the pattern.
I couldn’t identify it at first but luckily was hit by a bolt of lightning from a previous post on Baccarat and St. Louis boxes. After finding the post and the helpful link that Anne tique provided, I have been able to identify it as Baccarat 3388 the medium size powder box dated around 1870. I’ve not been able to find any comparisons so I thought I’d share here. I’m surprised I didn’t have more competition, so are these Baccarat and St. Louis boxes very desirable? It has a great uv reaction it’s really bright.
I hope these links work. Page 10

St Louis? Baccarat? Big cat trinket lid

Should this thread go in the trinkets category or Is this a French National treasure? Cheers Mike

That's a cracker, Mike. Yes I'd say it's a match for 3388 - is it the same diameter (86mm)?

I've not done the Baccarat section of the trinket sets website yet, but may I add your photos when I do please?
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Hi Anne,
Yes measurements look right. Yes of course you may use the photos when you want message me via here and I can send you better quality ones.
I can’t find any comparisons of Baccarat or St. Louis in Vaseline. Would these be the lower end of the market as most crystal Powder boxes by baccarat and St. Louis seem more expensive?
Cheers Mike

Thanks Mike, I will do. I don't honestly know the answer to your question though, sorry. I think many glassworks made things to suit a range of markets - whereas now we tend to distinguish between high-end and more affordable items being made by different companies.  As our late and much missed member Bernard Cavalot used to say, glassmakers made whatever the customer wanted, which is why we sometimes see non-catalogued items that confuse us of course. :)

Hi,
and here is the Saint Louis one from 1872, this the large one with pattern of strawberries. Both these are very uv reactive. The Baccarat one above was more common in opaline.
Not found comparisons of either of these in Vaseline.
Cheers Mike
