Topic: Bohemian Overlay Glass Bottle - Persian/Islamic Market

Hello,

I have bought a bottle without stopper.
I think its made in Bohemia, for the islamic market.
Ca. 1840-1860.

It nice overlay glass {opaline or alabaster glass].
And it's handcut and bejewelled.

It looks like the more common decanters and hookah bases.

But I can't find much information about it.
Can't find any examples and values anywhere.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I think this kind of style it's more known on this forum.

Lovely!  You need to get some books  now really

And do some online searches for museum websites.  Yes it takes time (years sometimes) but along the way you find some amazing pieces that add to other research.  I research in Czech and German as well as English. It's hard going, especially since I speak neither language but I have come across some utterly amazing glass I would never have otherwise found.

Haha yeah true!

It might sound very stupid, but for me it's one big "game of memory".

I've googled thousands of hours really.
And learned by it.


In the beginning I saw just a blue vase.
No idea what it might be.

The I just google something like:  "antique blue vase - *shape* - *color*.
And just went on for hours :p

I haven't read a any books. I just do it by pictures :p

I have 2 opaline books but they are in French.
And translating took me way too long to get through.


But the glass in this topic...
I believe I'm right on the date and origin.

It's just the value that I can not find.

Sometimes you see these things very cheap. ($ 150-300)
And sometimes the prices are sky-rocketing. ( + $2000-5000)

I'm not sure where this depends on.
But most "islamic bohemian" glass I see is either clear glass or overlay/überfangen glass.

This opaline/alabaster glass is a little harder to find.

So I may have a good thing going on here.

So I'm sure it's made for the Persian Market.

Although they are all much bigger.

Mine is only: 11,2 cm / 4,41 inches tall.

I would only use the Christie's one (no3) with the beads as a comparison - and they don't give much info except '20th century'.

The key to all these is having the matching stopper regardless of size - well in terms of  price and desirability it is.  In terms of interest if you are a glass collector, then the type of glass, overlay, colour, decoration is all interesting of course regardless of stopper, at least in terms of research.

If yours is only 4" tall then maybe it was a perfume, or perhaps a smaller bottle as part of a drinks set that might have also had  a larger bottle and glasses or something?

It's really pretty and I love the beads.

I've just posted it online for sale.
I know it's not worth thousands of dollars.

I've put a price tag on it for € 425,00.

And I described it as being made for the Persian market.
Made in Bohemia, ca. 1880-1890.


(At least I believe it's made around that time.)
The reason the third one doesn't give much information, is probably
because they haven't done really any research.

But.. who am I?

   This can be true.  I found one online with a stopper that was amazing, which had been sold as Russian (by a different well known auction house) a few years ago, but which turned out to be an incredible piece from Josephinenhutte.

And you were the buyer yourself?

Anyway.. I have another question, concerning selling some items.
I offer my items at ebay, etsy and catawiki.
(I don't have a personal webshop)

But the problem is that I get a low amount of views,
and on Catawiki (an online auction) I receive almost none to
very low bids. Most of the time not even making it to the reserve prices.

Is there any auction house you know of, where my kind of glass
would be appreciated more?

I heard "Dr. Fischer" here a while ago.
I have e-mailed them yesterday, but the problem is that the items have to be
there IN the auction house, for them to make pictures for catalogues.

That means that I have to shipped all of it to them.  (with the costs, ànd the risk of any losses)
And if it doesn't sell, they have to ship it back. Which will only cost me double.

But that's a problem for later anyways.

I'd first have to first an auction house which sells higher valued glass.

I tried christies and sotheby's etc.
Somehow they tell me my items don't fit in their auctions.
Strange thing is that I see so many op the same, and sometimes eve nthe exact same
items have been sold there in the past. I'm not sure why they don't accept.
Maybe because I'm a private seller? Or that I can't "prove" pre-ownership?
