Decanter flower decoration
« on: June 11, 2019, 10:19:02 AM »
Hi,this is a light freely blown decanter probably from the late 19th century and I'm guessing for the tourist trade. It has a flower pattern spelling out 'IRISH' and on the underside it's very nicely signed, made in Austriol,I'm wondering if it was sold in Ireland or Austria/Hungary? Or any other thoughts about it anyone might have?it has a pushed up base and a broken Pontil ,but the type of quality you wouldn't expect such a nicely done signature? Thanks.

Any chance it could say Austria rather than Austriol?  Looking at the ad in made......the construction of the loop and the straight line on each of them make me think what looks like ol at the end of Austriol could be an a drawn loosely so it looks like ol.

I suspect it's a whisky decanter.  Still can't tell you what it is......but if you're thinking about collecting a set Google "Austrian decanter enamel brandy" and check out the images.  Unfortunately, the eBay listing must be an old one as the link takes you to the current list and not that specific item.  But still a clue!

I know what you mean......when I saw IRISH my first thought was whisky and the second was I would have expected it to be square.  Did you manage to find the brandy one?

Not suggesting your piece is Loetz right now........but if you look at the 17th makers mark on this link, it clearly shows the a looking like ol in a very similar script to your signature

If it says 'Made in Austria' it'll be from the early 20th century at the earliest. If you notice in the link that Cat provided all the Loetz pieces from late 19th c. have 'Austria' and not 'Made in ...' ?  That's because it wasn't til early 20th century the practice started just like on ceramics/pottery.
