Antique Paperweight Help Please!
« on: July 07, 2019, 05:52:11 PM »
Hello! I have what I think is an antique paperweight. It appears similar to a St. Louis paperweight I found in a book. However, I saw that it looks like Baccarat did similar designs. The bottom of this paperweight is concave with a thin ring around that has quite a bit of wear. There's a line of white in the pink background. Would this be considered a flaw? What do you think? It's standard size about 3 1/2" x 2" tall.

Thanks for looking!

Juli

I couldn't upload the pictures because I guess they are too big. Here are links to the images on my selling site:

I tried reducing the size of the pics. Let's see if this works...

Correction: the size is 2 1/2" x 1 3/4" tall.

Does anyone have any idea on this? I can't find anything definitive searching for "clematis", "dahlia", "pink ground" paperweight.

Thank you for looking!

Update: I received information from an American paperweight collector that this was made by New England Paperweight Company.

It would seem that nobody here has managed to recognise it, so far.
I don't think you were being ignored - just nobody knew what to think about it.
Thanks for reporting back what you found!
 :)

LOL, I'm used to being ignored and have thick skin after 20 years activity on the internet! I actually did figure that no one recognized it. This board concentrates more on European weights, does it not? That's why I contacted someone who I learned had more experience with American paperweights as I found one with a similar flower made by Boston and Sandwich.

Thanks for the response, though! Glad to know this board is "alive". :-)

Have a wonderful day!

Oh, correction on the ID. It's called the "New England GLASS Company". They did more than paperweights!

It was bothering me. The flower looked a little like, but not enough like, some Scottish weights, but the rest was wrong - wrong shape of pink bed, and the wrong texture of the enamels in it. Then the dome was too high to be antique French, I think - but paperweights are not my area.
I should have at least said; "Hello and Welcome and thank-you for taking the time and trouble to post good images directly to the board. That is much appreciated.

Oh, not a problem! I'm aware that good pictures aid in the identifying (not to mention the selling)! The pink ground still stumps me on this one. I can't find ONE New England Glass paperweight with this background on the internet. If I sell it, I'm hoping it's a RARITY. LOL

Thanks again.

Hi Juli,

Nice weight. Yes, this is NEGC. I believe that there are only two other known examples with the same opaque pink ground. Here is one that was deaccessioned from the Art Institute of Chicago a few years ago.
