Can anyone ID this pressed glass dish butter dish with lid. I have searched the Sowerby catalogues but can't find it. No ID marks on it that I can find. Who made it and when? Any info much appreciated. Thanks

I can't see a match with any of the butters from Sowerby pattern book XI (1885), or with any of the Davidson covered butters from their catalogues of unregistered designs (1880-1890).

I recognised this piece so I went rummaging in dads cabinets, he has this covered butter as Sowerby no.1563 but I have not been unable to verify where that information come from.
Cheers Mike

Your Dad is quite correct, Mike - Sowerby pattern 1563 it is. Well found.

I have re-checked Vol.3 of the Thistlewood Sowerby CD-ROM catalogue and the pattern 1563 covered butter is shown on page 6 of the 'Sowerby Glass in Pictures' thumbnails and as a photo example in the linked pic.

Page 7 of Pattern book XI (1885) also illustrates the butter in the far left of the bottom row but the pattern number is missing from that particular page in the Thistlewood CD-ROM.

Hashinbaby, may I have your permission to add copies of your photos to the Sowerby Pattern Numbers section of the GMB Glass Queries Gallery for permanent reference, please.

Fred.

Actually, close scrutiny of the Thistlewood Sowerby CD-ROM pics shows handles that differ slightly to those in the photos of the opening post, which is possibly what threw me in the first place.

The CD-ROM pics show the handle on the lid and the handles on the dish body having an almost semi-circular basic shape with a single indent ( much like a ' 3 ' rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise) whereas hashingbaby's pics show handles with more angular 'corners' and an extra couple of 'bumps'. I think the other details of the shape and decoration make it unlikely to be anything other than the Sowerby 1563 dish (perhaps a later or slightly modified pressing?).

Fred.
