orange top vaseline glass vase. Any ID please?
« on: July 18, 2019, 05:39:18 PM »
Good evening forum,
Do any of our Vaseline fans have any info about this vase please.
It is not uranium to start with. Fairly clear at the base rising up to a light opaque finish towards the top. Nice white-ish Vaseline finish on the outside at the top with the orange finish on the inside around the top. The vase is ribbed and is 13.5 cm tall. I'm thinking that it maybe Czech...if anyone can ID a maker or country of origin, thank you.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I think you're looking for the words opaline or opalescent rather than vaseline to describe the opaque bits towards the top.
Vaseline is an american term, and it always refers to uranium. I have never worked out if an opalescent component is compulsory in "vaseline" or not.
I just avoid using the term completely. It's a confusing one, best dropped.  ;D

If you hold the rim up to the light and can see there is a "fire" glowing inside the glass, it is opalescent.
If it's just plain white, it's opaline.

Thanks Chopin. Gawd, aint it a minefield! It's definitely opalescent. Now, I've just been looking through google and I found a tall vase that was similar...but, without the frill around the top and more opal going down the vase. The piece is on a carnival glass website (not David Doty's). Ooh, time for a latte and Emmerdale (with hopefully a glimpse at the lovely Walther uranium bowl and figurine in Eric Pollards living room). Thank you for your input.

Opalescent is good. It's created using potash and/or arsenic in the batch.

It is a minefield ;D - but we were all new to it once.  It kind of gets hold of you and doesn't let go. 8)
