It looks quirky, which makes for interest, and with a re-struck rim like this it should have glowed, I thought - but sadly it doesn't contain any U., but it has a strong sunset glow which presumably is due to arsenic and calcined bone ash. Regret I parted with my copy of Gulliver some time back, which is probably the only source where I might have seem something like this, assuming it is that old. The higher rim on one side suggests a jip vase, but the squatness of this one is most unusual - don't recall seeing one quite this short and wide, but guess they come in all shapes and sizes.
I've always disliked the States term 'vaseline' but have to say that's exactly how this one appears in the flesh. The circle on the underside suggests this one has been on a hollow rod, so possibly States/Continent, but not U.K. ?? There is the remnants of a snapped sharp pontil scar too. There is plenty of dirt remaining deep in the cracks/crevices, so likely to have some real age - I did wonder if possibly States Fenton from mid C20 but I think it really is much older which is supported by the general style of pinched/folded and decorated feet. Height is about 4.25 inches (c. 110 mm) and about 5.75 inches wide (c. 145 mm).
Doubtless a non-starter as to attribution, but suggestions/ideas as to age and possible country of origin etc. will be welcome.
