Two Iridescent Bark Vases - are they Japanes The Best Art Glass?
« on: February 04, 2020, 09:00:45 PM »
Hello Glass Message Board

I have just bought two iridescent bark vases. One is aqua blue and the other is green. Each measures 170mm high x 55mm across. They both have identical bark moldings and are cased in clear glass with the interiors in yellow cream glass fading to green or aqua blue. Both bases are ground flat, one has a dimple in the middle of the base. Unfortunately no labels or etched makers marks. How were they manufactured - were these vases hand blown into moulds?

In my research I have read on various sites that these are often mistaken for Whitefriars or Davidson. Could they possibly be Japanese "Best Art Glass"? I would love to know if this is the case. I am guessing that they are from the 1970's? Also I can not find any historic info for "Best Art Glass" is it or was it a company producing glass or just a trading name?

I hope someone will be able to help me. I have attached three pictures of the vases. If you require better res. shots please let me know. Thanks in advance.

With best regards

Any chance of bigger pics? You can have up to 125kb each.  Unfortunately, at under 20kb, they lose definition when I try to enlarge them.  Be interesting to see in more detail......I can't recall seeing iridescent glass with a cream interior.  The polished Pontil mark (dimple) suggests they are mould blown.  Look forward to finding out more about them.

These come in a red/purple combination too. As far as I know, they have been ascertained to be Japanese, but I don't think we know for sure who.
About 17 years on, I now regret not getting the red and purple one!
It's a sore point.  >:(  ;D

Can you compare the moulding on yours to the one in the link.  Although this one doesn't have the coloured interior, it does have a label.  If the moulding matches, the label might help.
