Small brown Jar
« on: May 11, 2020, 03:53:21 PM »
Hello,

I was just wondering if anybody might be able to help me identify the use of a small glass screw-top jar I found at Broughty Ferry beach.

It stands about 4cm high by 3cm diameter, circular base. Don't think it's very old, but I'm curious nonetheless

On the base is imprinted:

A 442
C 1 (Could be C 11 - looks like the second 1 might not have printed properly?)
UGB

Thank you very much!

Joshua

An ointment jar?
"Vicks Vaporub" was in blue glass though and "Pickle's Snufflebabe" was in clear.
hello from Lochee! ;D

Looks like a Bovril Jar made post 1930s at United Glass Bottles. The company was based at Peasley Cross in St Helens, Lancashire, England. It closed down in the 1980s.

I thought it was United Bottle Glass, so the letters didn't fit for me. Doh. :)

my first thought was Bovril  -  then I looked at the dimensions and it seemed too small  - obviously wrong however and assume they came in different sizes.           These things were found very commonly when dump digging - the flat sides are usually the give away.
