I bought this bowl the other day not knowing who made it, but just liked it. It is an acid-etched cameo, with the cameo on the inside of the bowl. The outside is smooth. It measures 19.5 cm across the rim and stands 10 cm high. The pontil mark is ground out and concave. There is a fair bit of wear on the base and thus likely has some age.

It is signed on the edge of the ground out pontil mark, but I can't quite make it out. I looks like H. Pare or perhaps H. Pate. The initial may be an A, but I think H is more likely. I can't find the artist with any combination of the possible signatures.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have searched the internet for a couple of days but can't find a likely candidate for the maker.

Thanks.

Anton

Hi. I was looking around and came across Kosta Boda Bertil Vallien cameo bowls that look similar style and I think etched on the inside. I can’t see how they would tie in with the signature though...so maybe a red herring :)

I found a few possibilities for a maker that were using a similar production technique. For instance, I asked Correia Art Glass if it was one of theirs, but they said no. The signature is written very small: only 8 mm wide and 2 mm high. I think it is a genuine signature of the maker, perhaps someone who worked in a better known company rather than in their own studio.

I think I may have identified the maker. Scottish glass maker Anita Pate. Her studio is Vitrics Glass, since 1984.

Coincidentally, I bought another piece by Anita Pate a few moments ago today that uses the same technique as the bowl. This time it is clearly signed. I regret selling the bowl since I wasn't certain it was made in the UK. The museum specialises in British studio glass, particularly Isle of Wight glass, and we can't collect everything. I have now remedied the error of my ways!  ::)

The platter measures 24.5 cm in diameter.
