Are these bowls Whitefriars??
« on: November 13, 2020, 02:25:34 PM »
Can anyone help me in identifying these two footed controlled bubble amber glass bowls.  At a distant I assumed that they were Whitefriars. Checking the WF Catalogue the only thing that bore any resemblance to them was Pattern No. 9273 .The diameter of the larger one is 16.3cms with a height of 6.4cms, the smaller has a dimeter is 13cms and a height 6cms.  The glass is thick making the bowls surprisingly heavy for their size.
I found nothing quite the same size, no amber versions , no controlled bubble and no ribbing. I read on the Message Board that these were only made in Ruby.
I have scanned Murano and found nothing like them either.

Has anyone got any ideas.
Thanks for any help.

I'm not an expert but they might well be Powell/Whitefriars from the earlier part of the 20th. century. The colour looks right and they seem to have lots of age wear on the bottoms. Otherwise they could be Webb but I don't think so.

i bev, Thanks for you thoughts  which are most helpful. Why are you doubting Webb? Been checking these out since getting your message  and Webb looks right to me. Other than Whitefriars I tend to ignore these makers. Being reminded of this maker was most helpful.
Thanks again.

Hello Smitty, I didn't think the colour was right for Webb and usually when I think something is Webb I'm proved wrong ;D. A lot of Webb has an acid etched mark on the bottom but there doesn't appear to be one on yours. The GMB Webb experts might be able to tell you something.

Hi Bev, Just thought I would up date you on my research. I am now pretty sure these are Webb. Im informed that lack of a signature suggests they are seconds. I'm not sure why they should be seen as such. Maybe the bubble pattern is not as good as it might be. I could have been seen as a bit sparse especially at the top of the rim.
There is a surface bubble on another. I don't know. I still like them. Thanks again for your interest which put me on the Webb trail.
