1950s girls with nude backs
« on: August 31, 2006, 10:36:56 AM »
I was looking through the transfer printed glasses, and wondered about a set of 6 tumblers in a wire holder I had a while back - the tumblers were all transfer printed with 1950s girls in various national costumes, and on the backs (i.e. the inside of the glass) were nude.  I believe these are US, but can anyone tell me more for the next time I find some?

They sold well, and I liked them.  Sort of retro risque, know what I mean?
Thank you very much!

Lynne

Sorry we never answered this properly, Lynne!

I would say they were probably US as this glam type of art was very typical of the 1950s – however, showing their bare bums was probably a bit risque even then! :D

If you do come across some more, I would like to see a photo.

Well found: perhpas this is what Lynne was referring to. It would appear to be printed onto the top, judging by the gilt surround. At a guess I'd say it was made by Houze and it definitely has a US 1950s feel to it.

I'd say so too David. I've seen the naked behind glasses on eBay at various times as well.

I'd say that is definitely a transfer/print and could have been made anywhere where standards were less than high.

Hi All!  back from lovely Cornwall, and pleased to see that Frank loves this kind of stuff

Frank, yes, it is very tacky grotty transfer - you can easily feel the edges where the transfer was applied to the glass. And the glass is pretty dime-store quality as well     But they DO have a very retro appeal.

And yes Anne and David, the ashtray is actually one of the prints that was on  one of the glasses I had.
Thank you very much!

Lynne,

You may be interested (or not! :P ) in the following eBay item I won:

OLD SEXY LADY PINT BEER MUG

Has a reversed transfer on it as well, but the tankard may just be Chance. Love the way it was called "Old Sexy Lady" though

hee hee.. now is it the glass or the lady that is the old thingy??

I really loved the glasses I had - they were highball type glasses, in a plastic covered wire holder with little balls on the feet.  So very very 50s.

But my best friend wanted them. So I couldnt refuse her.
Thank you very much!
