Good Day

A friend has sent me photographs of a brandy balloon which is one of six she has recently bought at auction.  I am intrigued by the mark (see photo) which I am sure I have seen before but cannot find on the www.  I am hoping that someone can assist.  I believe it to be British crystal but may be mistaken in that.

The photograph is taken from underneath the base of the glass.  Possibly it is meant to be viewed from the top of the glass, which would mean that the image she has sent me is a reverse image.

Michael

I see I have inadvertently posted this in the wrong section.  My apologies to Admins.  Presumably you will move it.  I cannot see any way to move it myself and am loathe to delete it because it took me about two hours to work out how to get it here due to photos being too large.

 :) Hi and welcome.
If reversed, the mark seems to read E3, with a crown on top.
They do look to have a slightly unusual pattern cut into them, but I cannot make it out because of the fussy background.
It also might be easier to track a manufacturer down by the pattern rather than the mark.
Would it be possible to get hold of a pic with a plain black (or white) background? Maybe putting the paper or a black sock inside the goblet, so only one side shows and the image doesn't get tangled up with the far side. :)

Don't worry about being in the wrong section.
I'll ask one of our lovely helpful mods to fix it for you. :)
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thank you for your reply.  I agree with your "E3" comment but wonder if the "3" could possibly be a "B"?

I will try to get better photographs, but the problem is that the owner is a friend who is not particularly interested (I think) in knowing who made them whereas I am being driven mad by not being able to identify the mark.  I am passionate about elegant drinking glasses.

Have you found replacements.com?
This is the section for glass and crystal. They say they have 70,000 examples.
https://www.replacements.com/crystal.htm

If we don't see you for another week, will we send out a search party?  ;)

Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

I thought of that route too, but they have 42 pages of entries for Brandy glasses alone.  And they don't necessarily show the mark.  So after some time wading through photos I abandoned that option.  I battle with pattern identification at the best of times.  I was hoping that there would be someone on here who would see the mark and recognise it immediately.

I'm wondering if it might be a company mark, etched on to identify their property, rather than a makers mark. I too can't see the pattern well enough to identify it.

Didn't Stuart do something like that - some of their pieces were marked for a ship company? And I've seen glasses marked for Red Line.
(But I don't think we've got an elizabeth the third ship, yet. ;D )

Yes Sue I was thinking of perhaps a shipping or hospitality company. I think it would be unusual for a manufacturer to put a mark on top of the foot.

Edinburgh does. Certainly with their newer pieces. I can remember being very annoyed (before I started glass collecting, so perhaps nearly 30 years ago) when I bought a set of wineglasses for a wedding present and found the ugly mark visibly plastered on them. >:(
