Davidson 283/4 candlesticks in black matt (?)
« on: June 17, 2021, 08:51:17 AM »
These are identical to Davidson's 283/4 candlesticks down to their size, but the known colours shown are purple, amber, green and blue cloud glass, jade and amber.
I can't find any record of black matt.  Are these George Davidson or someone else's?
TIA ;)

How interesting Anne, you seem to find all sorts of curious things! :)  Your black candlesticks dinged a bell in my head, which sent me looking through the board and I found your earlier topic from 2014 about pots in the same pattern http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,56550.0.html. I also found a comment by Chris Stewart about a Davidson vase in matt black, which might be of interest http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,28650.msg155543.html#msg155543.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

I can't begin to tell you how fed up I am of finding odd curious things! (and not just glass).  Life would be much easier :P  I think I must attract the odd and curious, which probably says a bit about me also ::) ;)
Thanks for the links.  I immediately thought Art Deco when I saw these, but on the second link Chris Stewart says that Davidsons produced quite a bit of matt black in the 1950s.
I must confess to really liking matt black rather than high gloss, it looks so much classier IMHO.

I wonder if they possibly produced the black glass at times of national mourning?

That's an interesting thought.  I know the Victorians liked black glass mourning jewellery, and I found this example of a Victorian glass mourning beaker https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/709919950/antique-queen-victoria-black-glass Mod: link shortened for you
I'm not sure about later periods though.

Apologies if the link is long. I've forgotten how to shorten them ::)
