Help with ID please
« on: October 18, 2021, 12:35:49 AM »
I found this in a shop in Palm Desert CA, I fell in love with it instantly.  16.5" high, 8" across the top.  it says 2005 as a date and it appears to be a 1 of 1 piece.  I cannot decipher the signature, everything I've tried comes up wrong, any ideas out there?  I want to find the artists other work.  TIA

Thank you for the kind reply.  In person it is simply STUNNING, the pictures don't do it justice.  I've spent a lot of time looking at the little details and saying to myself, "how the heck did they do that?"  Tiny bubbles in between where all the longer black lines intersect, I want more of this artists work, providing I can afford it  :o

If you haven't already done so, and assuming your vase is American, you could try the Collectors Weekly website for more specialist help.

Look up reticello to find out about the black lines and bubbles.
You may find videos on youtube about it, it was a technique used by Janus Posniak in the netflix series "Blown Away" to make a decanter and goblet.
I'm sure the Corning Museum films might show it too.

I know of potential uk makers who might have been responsible for this beauty, but their names are not on it and I assumed it will be an american artist too.
Welcome to the world of loving glass! 8) 8) 8)

Thank you both NevB and Sue!  I'll try both suggestions and see where this leads.  The person who owned this piece is the widow of a famous actor, singer and cowboy amongst other gifts, but not someone I could feel good about approaching.  The actor was known for a considerable collection of Native American art but this piece was made after his sad passing.  The vase beside this one was incredibly intricate but just not my taste, also out of my price range at $5000.

So in looking for pictures of the two vases together I saw a picture of a small tag, it said "Murano" if so, not from the US after all.  Thanks for all the leads!

Here's an 8 minute video on reticello. I hope you enjoy it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCrdewFgObc

That style of cutting on the blue surface is called Battuto.
"Murano" can cover a lot. Historically (going back to the middle ages) it's an island on which the glassmakers were basically confined.
It kept the risk of fire away from the city, but also kept the glassmakers prisoner. They guarded the secrets of making it so highly that anybody letting information out was killed.
But there are a lot of different makers on the island, and it is now so famous that there is a part of China now called Murano so they can say glass is made there.
And with fame comes the now attendant copies, even glass sold on the island to tourists is imported.
You have to be very careful to try to find the true great masters and their work.

Your piece would be by one of them, if it is genuine Murano.
America is where Studio Glass was born. I wouldn't rule it out yet.  ;D 8) ;D

A vase currently for sale on one of the big Murano glass sellers websites, it shares many of the same features: https://www.mademuranoglass.com/shop/versus-exclusive-venetian-glass-vase-engraved-murano-art-glass/

They don't name a maker as far as I can see, there are one or two more similar on that site too. At least Murano looks spot on.

WOW John, the first link to the vase shows the vast majority on the techniques used on my vase!

Thanks for the short history lesson Sue!  If it was by one of their masters I'd think I'd be able to get a hit on the name, but then again I may be deciphering the signature wrong, I only tried 2-3 dozen combinations.

I'm not going to get obsessed with it but I will continue to look.  I may just have to contact one of the dealers and see if they recognize the signature, they won't know the piece, they see too many beauties and mine was made 16 years ago.

Thanks so much, each of you!

My first impression was the signature is Schriver or Schuiver but I suspect you've tried those. Their German origin didn't make me think Murano but indicated German/American.
