Topic: Sowerby Rd 333170 - Pattern 1380

So I acquired this little cup, which I originally thought was a custard, but am now thinking it's a mustard missing it's lid.

It looks like pattern 1380 in the 1895'ish pattern book. Plus, it has the lozenge for 10th March 1879, which Cottle's Sowerby book lists 333170 (for that date) as a mustard with cover.

When I checked it has a lip on the inside to accommodate a lid.

Measurements-
2.5" tall
1.75" diameter at base
2.5" diameter at top
3.25" width including handle

nice find  -  is it of interest to see the TNA factory drawing - that's assuming I have it?

I think it was in the glass gallery Paul.  It showed the outline but not the pattern if I remember correctly.

The image for the pattern number was on there too, but no photographs.

pix attached of the Register pages covering all of Sowerby parcel 9 for the seven items for 10.03.1879  -  I think the clerk was doing his best to write as small as he could, but hope you can read the descriptions on the right hand page.         Anyway, as you say Lindsey, definitely a mustard and cover.            As usual with these things, lacking any written dimensions.

Just noticed that Simon Cottle - in the Tyne and Wear Museums Service guide - has put a question mark against his own entry for this Registration.       He writes 'Mustard and Cover (?) - so perhaps like you Lindsey he too was missing the lid  -  he also appears to show the wrong factory pattern No. of 1388, although we've corrected this in the past here on the Board  -  it may have been Fred's detective work that revised it to the correct No. of 1380 - certainly wasn't me.

It definitely looks like pattern 1380 (minus lid).  The image shown in the 1885 catalogue, on Sowerby CD 3 is really clear.

I get the impression that some of the researchers/authors have looked at the Register only, which means they haven't seen the factory drawing and this may account for the doubt at to function of pieces, though if the catalogue is used then that should help to confirm what the item is for.
When are you going to find a large piece of Sowerby??
