I'm not an expert but it looks ok to me. A search shows it may be what's called "pāte de verre" where glass is layered in a mould then heated to fuse it together.

Thanks Nev I am sure you are correct with Pate de Verre. I am also thinking it may of had an accident at some time and loosed a little height.

Thanks Roy

I think you are right Roy, the pattern should probably go up further with an area of plain glass above it.

Hi Roy  -  sorry, unable to help you with provenance for this one.            As a general comment regarding cameo and pate-de-verre - regret I know only what I read in the books, and the image shown here looks more akin to cameo rather than the powder/paste invention.            Galle of course did make pate-de-verre, but other French outputs were better known for this method, which statistically reduces the chance of this one being from them.             Your piece has more the look of glass layers on top of a base glass, with mediums such as carving, acid or sand-blasting used to remove some parts of the surface glass to create the decoration, whereas with the paste method it's mostly the colour of the powdered glass that creates the picture and of course they were always one offs since the mould is decimated to retrieve the glass.           Agree, nice little piece though - v.g. find - well done.

Gosh, I don't think this is pate de verre ... is it?

I think it's cameo glass and the top has been cut down (the design finishes oddly abruptly at the top rim).  Does it have a very large polished pontil on the base almost to the edge of the piece?
I don't know if it's genuine or not.

Not pate de verre which is a casting process, this is blown, before having various bits removed to form the pattern.

The colours used would have me worrying if it was mine.

M it has a large polished pontil almost to the edge.

I believe  its genuine but has been cut down and for £15.00 I am not going to worry either way as the afternoon was very good including a possible miniature Clichy vase  sold cheap as a wavy vase.

Thanks for all your replies.

There are others out there with a cut rim - if they are correctly id'd.  It's just the abrupt finishing of the design that looks a bit odd.  The proportions still look ok but might it have been a solifleur (taller ) at one point?

Love the striped vase.  That's really pretty.

According to the French, all glass is pate de verre LOL. In truth, it's not that common. This is cameo
