blue cut glass vase
« on: November 27, 2021, 04:14:27 PM »
probably a non-starter for id, but you never know, and likely to be from around the 1970 - 80 vintage I'd suggest in view of the wear.       It's unusual to see straightforward coloured cut glass - almost all is clear.        Nothing apparent in the way of marks, but well made and quite heavy for size  -   my only thought was that I do recall Wedgewood used this pale blue on a few pieces in the recent past.    Other than that really no thoughts other than probably English, but not gauranteed.        About 8 inches (c. 20 cm.) tall.            thanks for looking and sorry pix not too good.  :)

It is unusual to see coloured cut glass.  That's a nice sapphire colour as well.
Will have a look through CH British Glass tomorrow and see if there is anything there.

thanks m  -  really no idea.      There's a fair amount of wear so perhaps a tad older than I'm thinking.     The attached pic. shows why I thought of Wedgwood  -  this was a small cut posy vase I found some years back  -  long since gone - but the similarity made me wonder.             The owl is saying  ..........  "Oh, why so blue little vase"  -  and the vase says - "shove off, you're only a handful of sand anyway".

The blues look different to me.
Didn't S&W use that sort of cut device around the
rim?
The design is quite 80s in cutting I thought  :-\
I'll check the book later this evening to see if there's anything similar.

The only thing with anything near similar for the body pattern is Stennett- Willson Blakeney decanter and claret glass.  Plate 703.  But that's a long shot and no date given.

Otherwise nothing I could spot in the big book 20th Century British Glass, nothing in The Crystal Years and nothing in British Glass between the wars either.

S&W did a sapphire blue.  So did WF.  Otherwise not sure who else might have done.  It's a great colour.

thanks for spending time on me  -  the Stennett-Willson (I bet he had trouble at school with spelling like that) suggestion is of course linked to Kings Lynn/Wedgwood that I mentioned a tad back re that little sapphire cut posy vase.           I think the Blakeny designs were also RSW and date to c. 1967.           RSW - apparently at the request of Wedgwood's management - also designed those Royal Commemorative goblets that have the jasperware medallions -  they were also in sapphire with some in topaz  -  will post a picture of some tomorrow, and you'll see blue is similar (perhaps a tad darker) to the cut vase here.

But you're right  -  it really is difficult to find cut material in blue.

this is RS-W's homage to the House of Windsor - goblets in a slightly deepish sapphire (also in topaz)  -  at least I think this blue isn't quite as pale as the cut vase here.    No idea if he also designed the jasperware medallions - possibly, but can't check as I've parted with Susan Tobin's book on Wedgwood.          I wouldn't normally buy Royal Memorabilia, but out one morning and this guy was selling eight for a reasonable sum, so got carried away - no idea how many there are in total.             Anyone know who the lady is in picture 2  -  Diana possibly or Anne who preceded the George's (died 1714), or a very young Victoria?   Some of these are limited editions, so perhaps when the time comes they might be worth more than I paid ;)                  As cut glass goes, they're very lacking in imagination - but collectors of memorabilia are always very keen.

W/Fs did more cut glass in sapphire than I'd realized - not that I've ever been aware of seeing any, but they look to have produced at least as many cut pieces in blue - and probably more - than any other house.
