it's good to enjoy getting out and finding the occasional worthwhile piece  -  hmm -  err, Reigate is getting a bit close to me, I must try and get there earlier in the morning.  ;D ;D

Jenny Thompson shows three lions like your one  -  she suggest these are  ""Possibly Greener & Co. c. 1880"  -  I've no idea if there has been a positive attribution since her comment (1989).

Yup, happens to me frequently. Often though, rather than not checking at all it is probably more a case of not being thorough. When an item has a busy pattern and/or it is dirty it can be hard to spot many issues. Many times I have inspected an item when buying, then inspected again after cleaning and only spotted a crack or chip when under my lights to photograph. Good lighting makes a huge difference and it tends not to be found indoors...
