Piano Insulator
« on: December 22, 2021, 03:07:19 PM »
Another piano insulator, in an unusual teal green colour. I've searched the usual suspects but not found one like it although there is an unattributed pair on Ebay in uranium glass, sadly this one isn't. It has spent much of its life upside down because there's as much wear on the top as the bottom. 8cm. wide and 4.5cm. deep.

I have a vaseline one and a blue one my research took me in the direction of Sowerby but I can’t remember why, not from a catalogue but perhaps in an advertisement in a book if I can find it I shall return.
I need to do a density check on it as the base stamp reminds me of Percival Vickers, the base stamps on mine vary significantly in depth changing the weight by quite a bit.

Cheers Mike

Thanks Mike, the base of mine reminded me of the PV one I have too. Out of interest mine weighs around 400gms with a volume of 150cc so a density of approx. 2.6gms/cc. I'll keep looking.

I think a 2.6 reading points this in the North West Manchester direction rather than North East, so could be a PV or even Derbyshire one. ????
My Vaseline one weighs 460grams and a blue one 410grams, i need to buy some scales capable of density testing. Perhaps Neil H can provide an opinion. Cheers Mike

The uranium in your vaseline one would, like lead , increase the density of the glass. I think the only way to determine the density of an irregularly shaped piece is to submerge the it in water to find how many cubic centimetres it displaces and then divide this by the weight to give gms./cm3.

Here are some photos of my blue and Vaseline ones plus a couple of other turquoise coloured insulators   Which is one of the more uncommon colours.
